Five-day Insight Meditation retreat – Auckland

Befriending the Mind

One common misunderstanding of meditation is that it aims to stop thinking. However, the purpose of insight meditation is to develop a more skilful relationship to every aspect of our experience, including our thoughts and emotions.

During this five-day retreat, we will explore ways to befriend the mind: to let go of unhelpful mental habits, and to cultivate helpful ones. Using a variety of different meditation practices, we will train our hearts and minds to experience greater ease, happiness, and deep freedom, so that we can become better friends not only to ourselves, but to those around us too.

Most of each day will be spent practising silent sitting and walking meditation, with some guided meditation, dyad (pairs) meditation, and opportunities for individual meetings with the teacher.

There will also be a period of optional, gentle mindful movement each day.

Experience level: This retreat is best suited to people who have done at least one previous insight meditation weekend retreat.

Time and dates: 4:30 p.m. Tuesday 2 April – 1:00 p.m. Sunday 7 April 2019
Location: Bella Rakha 581 W Coast Rd, Oratia, Auckland 0604
Cost: $450 + dana*
(cost will include a contribution towards the teacher’s international airfare)

Nine-day Insight Meditation retreat – Coromandel

Freedom here and now

This nine-day retreat provides an opportunity to explore different aspects of the Buddha’s teachings on Nibbana, also translated as Awakening, Enlightenment, Liberation, or Freedom. The freedom that is being pointed to here includes freedom from afflictive states such as anger, fear, sadness, greed; and freedom to live with more ease, happiness, and authenticity.

We will use a variety of practices from the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, alongside the four brahmavihara heart practices of kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, to directly experience these different aspects of freedom for ourselves.

Each day, there will be sessions of guided and silent sitting meditation, walking meditation, group discussion, individual meetings with the teacher and a period of optional, gentle mindful movement.

Experience level: This retreat is best suited to people who have done at least two previous insight meditation weekend retreats.

Time and dates: 4:30 p.m. Friday 23 August – 1:00 p.m. Sunday 1 September 2019

*Dana

In most Buddhist traditions the teachers are not paid to teach. Instead, the teachings are given on a ‘dana’ basis – dana being the Pali word for generosity or giving freely. At the end of the course, participants are invited to reciprocate this generosity by offering dana to support the teacher.

Jill is an independent meditation teacher and is not financially supported by any meditation centre or Buddhist organisation. She relies on dana for her livelihood, and often pays for the expenses incurred in offering a retreat, including most international airfares, herself.
